Rainbow Stud - Established late 1970's - named after all the colours of the Rainbow and the spirtual meaning of the Rainbow

Introduction
Rainbow Stud is situated under the Takitimu Mountain range in Western Southland, with the Hunter Mountains on the western side. This makes us very close to the Fiordland National Parks. Our views are spectacular, I feel privileged to be able to call such a place home. The horses are run on good steep hill country and are well used to every aspect of terrain. They are very sure footed and handle the steepest of hills, to the boggiest of places with ease. The horses are drenched in the same way as cattle, they are not caught, but go up a race one at a time. Foals go in with there mothers and are drenched in the same manner. This also makes our horses good to float as they are used to going into confined spaces.Young horses are not taught to lead and tie up until they are yearlings. I like them to learn how to be a horse within the herd situation, with as little human contact as possible. This ensures a good respect once they do begin their education.Rainbow Stud horses are usually broken in when they are at least five years old. Some are broken in older. The reason being that our horses are very slow to mature. They are not fully grown until they reach eight years of age. From six years of age they will develop and muscle up, it is in the seventh year nearly all of them will grow their last couple of inches ( five centimeters). They have excellent longevity and vitality, often competing well into there twenties. Still active into their thirties.
Bloodlines Are Everything
Rainbow Stud There are no other coloured horses bred in New Zealand from New Zealand bloodlines, that have the genetic strength to be bred with any type of mare and always produce a consistent type of horse.  One that will always perform. Their genes have been strenghtened through the way they have been breed.Unfortunately nearly all people put ALL coloured horses under the same label, they often think they are all related and connected. Which is absolutely false.Like all good breeding. BLOODLINES ARE EVERYTHING.The fact is I breed coloured horses. I do not breed for colour. Which may sound like a contradiction in terms, but the genes I want have always been sighted on the PINTO Blueprint of chromosomes from decades ago. From the 1930's.Also with some of the best and proven JUMPING thoroughbred blood incorporated in there along the way it has given us the best of performance in every drop of blood. Our horses have been consistent in all equestrian activities. From Advanced eventers, A grade show jumpers (old terms) plus endurance - World listing. Also everybody that has a RAINBOW seldom sells them on, they are treasured individuals. The results speak for themselves!!!
(Rainbow Penny & Me ) - Rainbow Penny is the whole reason I ever bred horses. I believed that if all the horses I bred, were only half as good as her, then they would all be excellent horses. She was the whole foundation that built a horse Stud, a horse that only comes along once in a life time.
Best of NZ Thoroughbred Linage
Rainbow horses carry the best of thoroughbred breeding. The bloodlines include Kurdistan, Salmagundi, (both top billing Stallions, in Southland). With Kurdistan being Champion sire of jumpers. Abba’s Lad by Aberlou another world reknown bloodline. Are related through their grandsires sharing the same Dam. Aberlou siring many Olympic Eventers.Precipitation, Night Raid - (Pharlap) and others. The Aberlou Story, The Kurdistan story, Salmagundi, read the connection to the mighty Tulloch, through Salmagundi. Personally I believe the New Zealand Thoroughbreds are some of the best horses in the world. As far as Eventing goes, nothing can compare when it comes to including these bloodlines into a horse.
